Her Story:  Betty Miller Buttram
 betty1
Betty Miller Buttram has been writing since she wrote her first play in high school.  Her dream of writing was deferred for a good while as she pursued a practical career as federal government employee.  In the spring of 2004, she became a member of the Black Women Playwright Group (BWPG) in Washington, D.C.  Her monologue, Where I'm From, was included in BWPG's Annual Staged Readings in 2004 and later performed at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2005.  An excerpt from her play, Picking up the Pieces, was included in both the Annual Staged Reading and at the Kennedy Center's Page to Stage New Play Festival in 2005. For BWPG Annual Staged Reading in June 2009, excerpts from her play, Ask Me No Questions, were performed at the Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C. Her debut novel, Cleo's Lies, was published in September 2008.

Cleo's LIES

 Written by:  Betty M. Buttram

Lying is undeniably a dirty and dangerous act to commit, especially when trust is involved.  From small things to large incidents, lies can negatively change your perception and judgment.

Cleo is an ambitious young woman whose enduring journey is hampered with jealousy, rejection, revenge, greed and obsession.  Feeling unloved by her parents, she escapes from her small southern hamlet and goes to Savannah, Georgia to start a new life.  Never having felt loved and not knowing how to love, Cleo gets what she wants by gaining trust from the people she meets, luring them with her web of lies.  In pursuit of her selfish desires, she deceives her friends and ruins the lives of those who stand in her way.  Her tangled web of lies, secrets and deceit is revealed when three women band together and carry out their revenge against Cleo.
